Ducks enjoying a nice day

We've been raising birds for over 15 years. Most of our chickens have come from situations where other people didn't want them or could no longer raise them, we do not raise chickens from chicks, only our ducks are raised from eggs, as we are able to keep or share male ducks and do not support killing male birds straight from the shell.

Did you know a chicken can lay eggs much longer than we are told?

The issue is- the older then hen, the fewer the eggs, but they generally eat the same. So a chicken owner has 2 choices, to "process" the birds, meaning use them for food, or let them live out their lives, which involves using more and more resources. At Ogden Fresh, our goal is to keep our hens laying as long as they are able to- which means their laying times during the year are somewhat limited. We use no lights, and we keep them cooped longer at the beginning and end of laying season so that the natural cycles are shorter.

Why do this?

Reproductive issues are too common with chickens, and there are generally no cures or treatments not to mention causing great suffering for the bird. Giving birds a longer period for their bodies to rest between laying seasons increases the chances they stay healthy and laying year after year. We like to think that most people do consider the welfare of the animal foremost, and we acknowledge that it isn't feasible for a lot of people raising backyard birds, or as egg farmers to keep layers past their peak egg production. We pass no judgement, we fully support all farms that prioritize the health and welfare of their animals. Few people want to pay more than $6 for a dozen chicken eggs, but the actual cost of raising birds from egg to their natural demise is higher than we want it to be.

How are you coming up with your prices?

Ogden Fresh Eggs is strictly hobby. We are not pulling any sort of profit, selling eggs covers the cost of feed for the laying season, during the off season we do not generate any income on our birds.

How do your birds leave the farm?

Currently we have a few birds in the double digits, and they are living their best lives. We have a "geriatric area" for those hens who no longer can jump up to roost at night, and they have the best personalities. Sadly some birds do pass away from cancer or latent viruses before they hit old age. We treat birds as best as we are able and humanely euthanize to prevent further suffering.
